Inspired by Majolica Tiles of Ancient Time’s Past

One of the most profound elements of this stylish collection lies in its nod to traditional Majolica tiles of the Uzbekistan region. These tiles have a long, rich, enduring legacy. Why? They came to fruition all the way back in the 9th century…Yes, the 800s.

They are known for their intricate, painterly designs and can be seen throughout the country on the facades of mosques as well as other notable landmarks.

These tiles that are typically glazed complete with some ornate graphic that the eyes cherish. Each one is meant to explode with vibrant colors, and captivating motifs. They often feature floral, geometric, or pictorial designs. Majolica tiles are prized for their artistic beauty and are commonly used for decorative purposes, such as in kitchens, bathrooms, and as accents in architectural designs.

As you find your way through each tile below, pay special attention to the pattern. You may just find yourself immersed in a century long gone by!

Ak Saray

Tradition can be found in even the most unique of places. Such is the case with our Ak Saray tile in the Marakand collection. It would work supremely well in a commercial bar setting as it can make an intriguing focal point as a bar facade. If your client’s drinks don’t have them talking, then this tile most certainly will!

History lover? You’ll love the back story on the palace that inspired this tile: Ak-Saray means “white palace” in Uzbek. It was built in Shahrisabz and  took over a quarter of a century to construct. There is a legend about a disobedient architect that was involved in construction of this magnificent palace. Amir Timur began to tell the craftsmen to hurry up and finish the decorative facing of the palace. But they were in no hurry to cover the building with majolica and mosaic. When the angry ruler ordered the chief architect to be brought before him, it emerged that had vanished after hanging a chain in the centre of the palace’s main arch. Since no other craftsman of equal stature could be found, the building remained unfinished. Some time later, however, the architect suddenly appeared and, after making sure that the chain on the entrance arch was now considerably lower, embarked on decorating the building.

Registan

Our Registan tile, inspired by the ancient Uzbekistan market square of the same name. This central point was the heart of Samarkand, and was a public area where citizens gathered to hear what their royal government had to say (often heralded by copper pipes called dzharchis). While long gone, it was at one point a prominent player in the Timurid Renaissance, and still an inspiration in modern day design, as seen with our very own tile!

Picture a vivid color palette of bright blues, lush greens, and deep blues, intertwining to form an infinite floral pattern that will transport you to a bygone era of rich history and mesmerizing beauty. In search of a serene escape in your kitchen?
